This small town was a major site
during medieval times, when traders crossed the River Cam, and currently
plays host to a collection of small villages dotted both inland and along
the coastline.
The town is also the centre of the
area's slate industry (Delabole has been excavating slate since the days
of Shakespeare and Sir Francis Drake). The highest peaks of Cornwall
sit behind the town marking the edge of Bodmin Moor.
With easy access for visitors the
peaks seem to call to all to master their heights. Rough Tor (1312ft)
and Brown Willy (1372ft) sit side by side and to the climber will deliver
a wondrous view of both sides of the county with examples of china clay
excavations heading down into the county.
The area also houses the highest cliff
in Cornwall, High Cliff, which at over 730ft is also one of the highest
of England's coast. Many famous names have been associated with the area,
from inventors and explorers to writers and playwrights; Tennyson Sir
Richard Grenville, Edward the Black Prince, Thomas Hardy and many more.
