Delabole

Delabole
Delabole slate quarry

Delabole is famous the world over for its vast slate quarry. Slate has been quarried here for over 400 years, first by men and mules and now by explosives and mechanical trucks.

The village of Delabole was formed by the combination of the three hamlets of Pengelly, Medrose and Rockhead. Slate was being excavated from here when Shakespeare was writing Hamlet and when Drake was fighting in the Armada.

Exported Delabole slate is to be found in Europe and North America although modern, man-made tiles has caused the decline of the quarry to be reflected in its task force; once employing some 600 men it has declined to around one tenth.
