Lewannick Church

At Two Bridges the Penponds Water meets the River Inney by the two arches of a 16th century bridge. Although the church has stood nearby for over 500 years it did suffer a severe fire during the last century causing major renovation work to take place.

The most famous discovery to occur at Lewannick was made by a local parson Charles Archer, during the last century, of two stones.

They are believed to be the gravestones of people buried here around 1400 years ago and are called Ogam stones.
Ogam is an ancient Celtic alphabet consisting of lines placed at various angles to a long base line. There is another Ogam stone at St. Kew in Cornwall but nearly all others are in Ireland.
